Summer has officially arrived and Monmouth County Parks is jumping into the season with pond explorations, a concert, star gazing and more.
Here’s what’s planned:
Take the grandkids
Life in a Freshwater Pond from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on Thursdays, June 23-August 25 at Freneau Woods Park, Aberdeen. Meet outside the Visitor Center and join Park System Naturalists in discovering what lives in and around a freshwater pond. Open to all ages; under 18 with adult. Wear closed-toe shoes. Weather permitting. FREE!
Travel down memory lane
Concert in the Park: Altha Sings – Sentimental Journey Swings from 7-8:30 p.m. on Friday, June 24 at the Thompson Park Theater Barn, Lincroft. Hear singer Altha Morton and a 17-piece big band bring to life the great female vocalists of the 20th century and perform favorites from the hay-day of swing. Bring chairs or blankets, food and soft drinks. The concert is outdoors but will move inside if the weather is bad. FREE!
Gaze at the stars
Under the Summer Stars from 10-11 p.m. on Saturday, June 25 at Bayshore Waterfront Park, Port Monmouth. Meet in the beachfront area and look for key objects and constellations in the summer sky with a Park System guide. Bring a chair and a flashlight. Open to all ages; under 18 with adult. Weather and clear skies permitting. FREE!
Poignant poetry
A Midsummer’s Night Sonnetry: Fourteen Sonnets by William Shakespeare from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, June 26 at the Thompson Park Theater Barn, Lincroft. Listen to performance readers explore and recite fourteen of Shakespeare’s most poignant sonnets in his plays and penned sonnet collection. FREE!
Fossilling fun
Fossilling at Shark River Park from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. on Thursday, June 30 at Shark River Park, Wall. Experience fossil hunting in the cool waters of the Shark River with a Park System Naturalist. Open to ages 10-17 with adult. Pre-registration and fee required.
